Mrs. Arnold nee Lewis was born in 1916. Her father, Frederick William, was originally from London, where he had owned a greengrocer's shop. He was a cooper by trade and came to Salford to find work on the Docks. The donor's mother died whilst giving birth to twins who survived her for a short time. There were seven other children, Ivy, Drenda, Fred, Maude, Rose, George, Clara. As Mr. Lewis was in full time employment each of his daughters, in turn, had to act as a substitute mother, until her marriage.
