Administrative / biographical background

The County Lunatic Asylum (later First County Lunatic Asylum) was proposed in 1793 and opened in 1823, funded jointly by subscribers, the county and Gloucester city. The subscribers were "bought out" in 1856, and subsequently purchased Barnwood House to use as a private asylum.

The hospital has continued on the same site throughout its history and closed in 1988.
