Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume MM9 is the nineth in the series of thirteen 'MM' volumes, which covers various preferments, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation.; The volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed Land Agents, Messrs. Cluttons, Messrs. Smith & Watkins, Messrs. Pickering & Smith and Messrs. Smiths Gore Norton & Co. The preferments include the following: the Worcester Bishoprick Estates vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 13 November 1860 by vacancy; and the Windsor Chapter Estates, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on the 29 September 1866 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 28 June 1867 by Order in Council. ; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as it was the most comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent and condition of the preferments that had been transferred. ; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports.; However, it is important to mention that portions of the Worcester Episcopal Estates were re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporation as the permanent endowment of the See of Worcester on 29 September 1870 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 12 August 1870. These permanent estates were then subsequently transferred back to the Church Commissioners as Bishopric Late Permanent Estates (under the Episcopal Endowments and Stipends Measure, 1943) on 1 April 1948 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 30 April 1948 by Order in Council. ; The volume also has added annotations often regarding the disposal of property or land since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporates later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Worcestershire, parishes of Alvechurch, Blockley, Ripple and Upton on Severn; the county of Buckinghamshire, parishes of Chipping, High Wycombe and Woodburn; the county of Wiltshire, parish of Dinton; the county of Dorset, parishes of Hinton St. Mary and Margaret Marsh; the county of Breconshire [Brecknockshire], parish of Llangorse; and the county of Gloucestershire, parish of Twyning [Twining].
