Administrative / biographical background

Under the Town and Country Planning Act 1947 the County Council was responsible for the preparation of a Development Plan which included town maps for urban areas in the county. The published material submitted to the Minister of Housing and Local Government and approved in 1973 is listed as C/P 1/75-80. The plans listed below are preliminary records drawn in preparation of the final plan: they were passed by the County Council to Lewes District Council in 1974 when the preparation of such local plans became a district responsibility. Although most of the plans were created by the County Planning Department in connection with the Development Plan, it is clear that several of them had been generated by Burgess Hill UDC itself and passed to the County Planning Department, or by the County Planning Department itself in connection with earlier work. In both cases the plans were re-numbered with the Planning Department's number/letter reference, and this list is arranged in that order.
