Title

Steyning Workhouse and Southlands Hospital: registers of admissions and discharges

Description

These registers, which are chronologically arranged, were designed to help keep a record of weekly and quarterly totals of inmates in the workhouse. They record the names of all those admitted and discharged each week, with years of birth, occupations, parishes of origin. Cases are classified according to whether they are sick or able-bodied; adult, child or lunatic; male or female and the class of diet to which they are entitled is noted. In the later period the local authority and/or committee responsible financially are quoted
