Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume P1 is the first in the series of three 'P' volumes, which covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of Lichfield, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; This volume contains surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Cluttons, Messrs. Pickering & Smith and Messrs. Smith & Watkins. The preferments in this volume include the following: the Lichfield Chancellorship Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 13 August 1855 by vacancy; the Lichfield Deanery Estates (with Brewood & Adbaston Prebends annexed) transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 8 October 1868 by vacancy; the Lichfield Precentorship Estates (with 1st Canonry, Colwich and Bishop Itchington Prebends annexed) transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners in April 1850 by vacancy; the Alrewas Prebend Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 9 June 1854 by Order in Council; and the Weeford Prebend Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 13 August 1855 by vacancy. ; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred.; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports. ; The volume also has annotations often regarding the disposal of property since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporates later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume include: the county of Wiltshire, parishes of Hill Deverill, Horningham, Heytesbury, Swallowcliffe, Tytherington and Sutton Veney; the county of Staffordshire, Alrewas, Pipe Redware [Pipe Ridware], Edingale, Kings Bromley, Hans-acre [Hansacre], Armitage, Lichfield St. Chad, Lichfield St. Michael, Weedford, Stafford St. Mary, Fradswell, Eccleshall, High Offley, Norton Caines [Norton Canes], Hints, Elford, Whittington, Berkswick, Brewood and Adbaston; the county of Shropshire [Salop], parishes of Prees and Wellington; the county of Warwick, parishes of Ryton on Dunsmore [Ryton upon Dunsmore], Ryton, Bishops Itchington, Chadhunt, Buddenhall, Burton Dassett, Burntwood, Elsford, Longdon, Bishops' Tachbrook, Ufton and Wolvey; the county of Derbyshire, parishes of Wilne, Sawley, Long Eaton and Sandicare; and the county of Lancashire, parishes of Flixton, Urmstone and Barton upon Irwell (Eccles).
