Description

Survey volume GG1 is the first in the series of seven 'GG' volumes, which covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of York, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; This volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Pickering & Smith. The preferments in this volume concern the York Cathedral Estates, which were transferred by commutation to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 29 September 1852 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 10 September 1852 by Order in Council.; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred.; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports.; However, it is important to mention that a portion of the York Capitular Estates originally commuted to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners were re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporation on 6 April 1862 (date effective), which was published in the London Gazette on 25 July 1862. The estates were then later transferred back to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners as Chapter Late Permanent Estates as follows: 25 March 1932 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette by Order in Council on 22 February 1935; and (Fabric) 24 June 1938 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette by Order in Council on 13 May 1938 ; The volume also has annotations often regarding the disposal of property or land since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporate later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Yorkshire, parishes of Aldborough, Aughton, Borres, Brafferton, Brodsworth, Brotherton, Budwith, Burton Leonard, Burton Pidsea, Croft, Helperthorpe, Hornby, Langtoft, Ledsham, St. Lawrence, South Cave, Weaverthorpe, Whetdrake, Whixley, York St. Mary Bishophill Junior and York St. Cuthbert; the county of Nottinghamshire, parishes of Askham, East Drayton, Laneham, Ruddington and Sherton; the county of Lincolnshire, parish of Worlaby; and the county of Lancashire, parish of Kirkby Ireleth.
