Mr Golovine explained that the idea of installing a rocket unit in the F4/48 appeared attractive for 3 main reasons: 1 It would provide increased manoeuvrability at or near the aircraft's normal ceiling, where the thrust of the main jet falls off so as to leave no margin for manoeuvring. 2 Very greatly increased climb could be obtained using a rocket as a climb assister, particularly above 20,000 feet. On the Hawker P.1072 fitted with the Snarler the rate of climb had been increased in this manner at 35,000 feet from 2,400 to 12,000 ft/min i.e. by 5 times. 3 In an overload case the rocket could be used for assisting take-off, although this application might not be of great importance. It was suggested to Gloster that, in view of the above, it would be worthwhile investigating seriously the installation of the Screamer in the Javelin F4/48, particularly the high altitude version
