Description

A study of testimonies, or prophecies of Christ in Scripture, quoted as such by Fathers of the Church. Showing that they are such, or, conversely, that their claim to be such is a proof of a Greek Gematria'. Dated November 1924. A paper by Thomas Simcox Lea (1857-1939), biblical exegete and botanist. Typescript. Lea was the author of 'The Hypothesis of a Greek Gematria in the Early Christian Church' (Exmouth, 1929); 'Further examples of Greek Christian Gematria' (Exmouth, 1929); 'A preliminary investigation of the cabala contained in the Coptic Gnostic books and of a similar Gematria in the Greek text of the New Testament', (Oxford, 1917), and other works. He was Vicar of St. Austell, Cornwall, 1910-23. ff. 1-16. Letters from Thomas Simcox Lea to the Librarian, Secretary and President of Sion College presenting this manuscript and also Sion L40.2/E69, and commenting on them. November 1924-February 1925. Together with an adverse report on this manuscript (Sion L40.2/E68) by Henry Lowther Clarke (1850-1926), formerly Archbishop of Melbourne, dated 16 Jan. 1925 (f. 9). ff. 17-117. 'A study of testimonies, or prophecies of Christ in Scripture...' At f. 19 is a dedication of the work to Lea's father, Frederic Simcox Lea (c.1824-1893) who was President of Sion College in 1871.
