Administrative / biographical background

William John Francis Keatley Stride was rector of Besselsleigh, 1920-1936, and developed a keen interest in the history of the parish. He had taken his degree in history (Oxon 1894). Stride was ordained in 1903, and served as curate (1902-1903) and vicar (1904-1919) of Wootton. He became Rural Dean of Abingdon in 1921

Edith Ball-Lenthall, patron of the living of Besselsleigh, seems to have been related to Mr Stride; in letters preserved here, Mrs Ball-Lenthall addresses him as "Daddy", although according to Burke's Landed Gentry she was the daughter of Walter Lenthall. "Daddy Stride" was in fact the nickname given to the rector by parishioners
