Description (What the record is about)
-
Enclosure to RSAA/SC/S/RS/6/50, comprising a transcription made by Richmond Shakespear of a letter received from Lady Macnaghten and Lady Sale in which they express their gratitude for his assistance in their rescue at Bamiyan.
The transcription begins: "Rescued as we have so lately been from a cheerless captivity which threatened soon to terminate in hopeless slavery in a land where the laws of humanity are unknown or unacknowledged..." Verso is a transcription of Shakespear's reply.
The original letter (which does not form part of the RSAA collection) is noted as having been "signed by all the prisoners" who were at Bamiyan. It is, however, printed in "Memorandum of the Services of Brigadier-Gen Sir R Shakespear" (RSAA/SC/S/RS/5, pp. 14-15).
