Other Data: born 16/10/1893 at Woodmancote, Dursley, Glos. Son of Charles Newcombe Barns (accountant) and Gertrude Barns (nee Turnbull). Educ City of London Sch & Pietermaritzburg College, Natal. A Commercial traveller on return from SA. Served TA 3/17 Londons (Home 31/8/14-22/10/15) recommended for Commsn 10/10/15 whilst a Cpl serving with 2/16 London Regt. To France; evacuated 3/7/16 from Rouen to Southampton (on Aberdonian) with bullet wound right neck and left shoulder from mg fire at Hebuterne. Hospital No 3 Gen Mil Hosp Wandsworth. Medical board 9/11/16 and on sick leave until Jan 1917, then to MGTC Grantham 21/2/17. Medical board 22/1/17 "at Serre on 1/7/16 received gsw -entrance at anterior fold of right trapezius, exit through left scapula below spine. Fragments of bone removed from exit wound. Limitation of movement left shoulder - indication of nerve shock. Injureies severe but not permanent. Board is of the opinion that he would be better with active duty with troops". Posted HQ Eastern Command 50 Pall Mall. Died 22/7/18 at his home in Woodford of pneumonia following influenza aged 24. (Drarley Dale, Buckingham Rd, Woodford, E18) Estate £526/3/5d;

Additional Information: Son of Charles Newcombe Barns and Gertrude Barns, of 51, Buckingham Rd., Woodford. Born at Dursley, Glos. Wounded July, 1916, at Hebuterne; afterwards appointed to War Office as D.A.D.L. Cemetery: CHINGFORD MOUNT CEMETERY Essex, United Kingdom Grave or Reference Panel Number: D.10. C.R. 7149.;
