DD/MI/1-244 is a collection of disparate papers and volumes apparently collected and kept by the Mechanics Institution for their historical or educational interest; even those few records of the Institution's own administration which are here appear to have been retained on these grounds. Some items came from named donors; others may have been purchased (eg., some are marked with lot numbers). Most of the volumes bear the Institution's library press marks and/or stamps or bookplates.

The greater part of the records listed here were deposited in 1986. However, items earlier deposited in the City Archives, (which came to the Notts. Archives Office upon the amalgamation of the two in 1976), have now been re-listed & incorporated in this series. These comprise:-

The bulk of DD/MI/245-299 consists of the administrative papers of the Mechanics Institute: - minute books, accounts, registers of members and so on. The long and reasonably complete series makes them not only of use for the history of the Mechanics Institute itself but also for the general social history of the area.
