Description (What the record is about)
-
Introduction This property was purchased by Edward Jones (1846-1928) in 1896 and sold by his grandson Arthur Ronald Hockley (1912-2003) in 1957. The deeds of the freehold title were handed on at the point of sale and their present whereabouts are unknown; the surviving documents consist of leases and correspondence, from which a certain amount of information concerning the ownership of the property can be established. This introduction presents the descent of the freehold title to the property in narrative form, and is based on the leases and other documents, which are then individually listed in summary form. A photograph and pedigree of the Jones and Hockley families, supplied by the donor, have been placed at the end as AMS 6719/20 and 21. On 21 August 1860 the property was sold by Breach to Gallop, who mortgaged it to Manley on 12 September 1862; the mortgage was repaid to Clement and another on 11 April 1882. On 11 August 1882 Gallop conveyed the property to Mark Breach, who mortgaged it back to the vendor the following day. On his death in 1883 his widow Ann Breach became tenant for life, but by 1896 her interest had passed to Charles Harman. On 24 June 1896 Harmond and another (perhaps Mark Breach's executors) sold the property to Edward Jones, who assented to its vesting in his daughter Annie Elizabeth Hockley on 11 June 1928.
