Administrative / biographical background

Methodism came to Filey in 18086 with meetings held in barns and sheds. Following a visit from John Oxtoby, one of the early pioneers of Primitive Methodism in the area, a Primitive Methodist meeting was established as distinct from the existing Wesleyan fellowship, in 1817. Other early pioneers of Primitive Methodism in Filey were Messrs Coulson, Herod and Peart. The Albert Hall, formerly Bethesda, in Chapel Street, Filey, was established in 1823. Ebenezer Chapel was formerly known as the Fisherman's Chapel, built in Union Street, Filey, in 1870. From 1930 it was known as Ebenezer; it closed in 1975.
