H. E. Armstrong was a student at the Royal College of Chemistry from 1865 to 1867, and Professor of Chemistry at the Central Technical College from its foundation in 1884, until 1913. He was therefore closely connected with two of the constituent colleges of the Imperial College.
Miss Nora Armstrong, the daughter of the Professor, presented the main body of the papers listed here to the Imperial College, in 1958. They probably represent only a fraction of the Professor's correspondence during his long and active life. Enough remains however to indicate the breadth and vigour of his interests.
J. Vargas Eyre consulted these papers when he wrote his biography of the Professor, which was published by Butterworths in 1958. A reference is given for any letter quoted in this book. All the letters, unless otherwise described, were written to the Professor and are holograph or signed typewritten letters. Most of them are loose but a few ( mostly testimonials and letters of appointment ) have been mounted in an album.
