Description (What the record is about)
-
Manorial records, deeds and family papers of the Tipping, Wroughton and Norris families of Woolley Park, Chaddleworth, Billingshurst (co. Sussex) and Hughenden (co. Bucks.)
This important collection is noteable for its lack of manorial records, the whereabouts of which is unknown (July 1950) though they may possibly remain in the hands of Messrs. Morland of Abingdon who were stewards of the estate in the early nineteenth century.
With the exception of the few outlying properties in Sussex, Bucks., and Essex, the estate was remarkably compact and the documents listed below relate to a number of parishes in the vicinity of Newbury and includes an important, if small, series of medieval charters for Thatcham.
A number of parochial records was found with these MSS. and these have been treated under Official Records and Maps; in every case the incumbent holds other parochial documents. One of the most important groups of papers is that relating to Enclosure see D/EW/E8-12; P 24.
The important estate and family papers of the Tipping, Wroughton and Norris families of Woolley Park, Chaddleworth, and of Sussex and Buckinghamshire, c. 1290 - 1937, relate mainly to a compact estate in southwest Berkshire, of which there are a number of maps, 1741 - 1862. The title deeds include a small but important group relating to Thatcham, c. 1290 - 1366. There is important matter on private and parliamentary inclosure in a number of parishes in the 17th and 18th centuries. There are manorial records for three Sussex manors, Bassetts Fee in Billingshurst, 1433, 1468, Billingshurst, 1590 - 1633, and Netherfield, 1683. Stray parish records from Brightwaltham, 1653 - 1861, Chaddleworth, 1717 - 1869, Farnborough, 1840, Fawley, 1861 - 1865, and Winterbourne, 1759, are also of interest.
