Description (What the record is about)
-
Microfilm copy of a diary, in three volumes (293pp, 345pp and 158pp also including copies of signals, presscuttings and photographs), kept by a ship's corporal in the battle cruiser HMS INFLEXIBLE, July 1914 - June 1919, and covering his service with the Mediterranean Fleet, including the pursuit of the GOEBEN and BRESLAU (August - September 1914); with the Battle Cruiser Squadron of the Grand Fleet before proceeding with HMS INVINCIBLE to the South Atlantic and taking part in the Battle of the Falkland Islands on 8 December (October 1914 - January 1915); her operations with the Eastern Mediterranean Squadron from February 1915 until she was badly damaged in the attempt to force the Dardanelles on 18 March 1915; and her service with the 3rd (later 2nd) Battle Cruiser Squadron (Grand Fleet) from June 1915 - February 1919, including occasional sweeps in the North Sea, the Battle of Jutland and the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet. The diary entries reflect the adverse effect of the Grand Fleet's long periods of inactivity on the morale of the ship's company and consequent occasional disciplinary problems, and also throw light on the popularity of INFLEXIBLE's different Captains during the war.
