Administrative / biographical background

Family papers of Sir Henry Stephenson, Bart. (1865 - 1947) and of the Parkers of Sheffield, one of whom, Emma, daughter of Thomas James Parker, married Sir Henry Stephenson, knight (father of Sir Henry) in 1862. She died in 1921 at The Glen, Endcliffe. The Parker papers were contained in two parcels labelled 'Old Wills' and 'Letters, recipes, various documents, from The Glen, Aug 1921'. These are the papers of Lady [Emma] Stephenson's father, Thomas James Parker. The Parkers were solicitors in Sheffield for several generations. Some of the family deeds and legal papers will be found in the Parker Collection (PC) at Sheffield City Archives. The Stephensons were co-founders of the firm Stephenson and Blake, typefounders.

Biographical note about Sir Henry Stephenson, 1st Bart.: son of Henry Stephenson (who was knighted in 1887), and Emma Parker, Henry Kenyon Stephenson was born in 1865. From 1886 he was active in the West Riding volunteer artillery, received the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and served at the front from May 1915 - Dec 1917, when he was placed on the Reserve and received the Distinguished Service Order medal. He was twice Lord Mayor of Sheffield, 1908-1909 and 1910-1911. In the General Election of Dec 1918 he was elected MP for the Park division, Sheffield as a coalition Liberal. He was re-elected in Nov 1922 but defeated in the election of Dec 1923. He was Chairman of the Council of Sheffield University 1918-1946 and held many other local offices. He received a baronetcy in 1936 and died in 1947. His wife Frances (née Blake) survived him until 1953.
