The majority of these documents were deposited in the East Sussex Record Office by Mr. P.A. Williams, D.S.C., Warden, Sackville College, High Street, East Grinstead, in September, 1967, and April, 1968, and transferred to the West Sussex Record Office in May, 1975.

Add Mss 17837-17840 and 17858-17859 were deposited in the East Sussex Record Office by Messrs. Pearless, De Rougement and Co., Solicitors, Church Road, East Grinstead, in May, 1954 and transferred to the West Sussex Record Office, in May, 1975

By his Will, dated 10 February 1608, Robert Sackville, second Earl of Dorset, appointed his executors, William Lord Howard and Sir George Rivers, to found and incorporate an institution for the relief of 31 single and poor persons, and charged his estates in Sussex and London with the annual sum of £330 to support the charity. A college was built at East Grinstead in c.1616, and was incorporated by charter in 1631.
