Articles of agreement.

1. Mayor, Aldermen & Burgesses of Shrewsbury.

2. John Waterfall of Shrewsbury, plumber.

At a public assembly in the Guildhall 2 October last, the mayor, aldermen etc. appointed a committee to view the repair and decay of the bridges, conduits and common pumps of the town, and finding them to be of no use, they agreed with John Waterfall for making lead pipes instead of wooden pipes in terms as follows:-

1. John Waterfall, in consideration of the yearly sum of £5 paid to him during his life undertakes, at his own cost, to take up the three wooden pumps - one near the market house, one near the fish boare on S. John's Hill, and one in Doglane near Clement Owens, and erect new lead pumps in these places where the old ones stood, the same to be done "well sufficiently and artificially as any plummer shall think fitt and to affix all things necessary thereunto for the pumping of water".

2. He agrees to keep these pumps in good repair and the wells to which they are fixed cleansed and scoured, and to do all things proper "whereby the water shall in noe wise be damnified or annoyed".

3. The Mayor, aldermen & burgesses agreed to pay John Waterfall £5 annually on the 1st May during his life.

4. Waterfall is to have the material of the old pumps. If he die within 2 years, his executors are to receive £5 towards the charges of fixing the pumps.
