Register of the names of benefactors of Sion College Library. The register was displayed on a desk in Sion College Library, to which it was attached by a chain, part of which survives. It contains the names of benefactors only, without details of the books which they gave. It complements the fuller Book of Benefactors (Sion L40.2/E64) where details of books given to the Library were entered. Pasted inside the front cover is a printed set of rules for students using the Library, entitled 'De admissis ad studendum in Bibliotheca', with a decorated border and intitial. 1633. f. 1. Blank. f. 2r. An encomium of John Simson (d.1633), founder of Sion College Library. The encomium refers to the Book of Benefactors (Sion L40.2/E64) given by Simson: 'He gave a fayre vellome booke clasped and bossed with silver to the valew of twenty pounds, carefully preserved within this desk ...'. f. 2v. 'The names of benefactors to this Library of Sion College, as they are more at large entered in the Register Book by way of thankfull memoriall'. ff. 3r-29r. Benefactors 1629-1678. In the hand of John Spencer (d. 1680), Sion College Librarian. f. 29r-v. 'The names of such whoe have in part repaired the losse of very many bookes in the late dismall fire. Anno 1666'. f. 30. Blank. f. 31r. 'The names of all such benefactors whoe have adorned, beautified or any way considered this Library as to make it fitt for bookes and usefull for students'. ff. 32r-50v. - Original leather binding 253 x 185mm, rebacked. Title stamped in gold on the front cover: 'The names of benefactors to this Library of Sion Colledg MDCXXIX'. Metal cornerpieces and clasps. Attached to the rear cover is a portion of a chain by which it was fixed to a desk in the Library of Sion College. Vellum leaves.
