Description

The archive consists of a typescript of autobiography 'The Long Day Ended' (1880s-1930s). These reminiscences provide interesting descriptions of South America in the 1920s, and of a chapter in the history of the Ukrainian fight for independence.

Mary Ryott Sheepshanks (1872-1960) was born in 1872, the daughter of an Anglican clergyman who was later Bishop of Norwich. After Newnham College, Cambridge, she went to Morley College and was appointed Principal at the age of 25. From 1913-1920 Sheepshanks was Secretary of the Women's Suffrage Alliance. She was also an editor of 'Jus Suffragii', the journal for the International Alliance of Women. During the First World War was active in the Women's League for Peace & Freedom (WILPF), and as Secretary of the WILPF she travelled widely in Europe 1922-1934, having previously travelled through much of South America. After a visit in 1930 to East Galicia (then under Polish rule) she gave active support to the cause of Ukrainian independence and retired from public life at the beginning of the Second World War.
