Description (What the record is about)
-
Concerning 111-113 Mare Street (earlier 3-4 The Triangle). Deed series begins with an abstract of title of Daniel Danvers to the property (in 1726 held as copyhold of LOrdshold Manor by Samuel Read and occupied by Nehemiah Lyde). This includes a plan of the house, showing part in use as a schoolroom. The property remains with the Read family until 1754, when Mary Read married Daniel Danvers. A later Daniel Danvers surrendered it in 1801 (2) to the trustees of Charlotte May, who in turn in 1824 leased it to William Lucas (3). At this date the earlier house (described as Albion House, successively occupied by John Fairchild, Mrs Perry (known from other sources as keeping a school, see below) and John Taylor, had been demolished by Lucas and replaced by two new houses. Lucas' lease was for 99 years.; it was redeemed in 1835 by Harry May, heir of the lessor (7).. Harry May and his wife retained the property until 1875 when it was surrendered to Henry Spratt (17, plan on deed). Spratt died in 1910 and his heirs retained the property until 1927 (24-26) when it was enfranchised and sold to Hazell & Co.
