Description

Family muniments of Copley of Sprotbrough (Deposited, per British Records Association, 1960). Records including:

Manor: Sprotbrough court rolls, byelaws 1714-1767, chief rents 1530-1674, rental of manor 1439.

Public Central: Part of account roll for daily expenses of royal commissioners at Threlkeld, Feb. [c.1375].

Public Local: Papers of Sir Godfrey Copley J.P. re collection of excise and hearth tax, licensing of alehouses, treasurership for lame soldiers 1660-1674.

Book of agreed rates for all places in West Riding, with many details and list of county bridges 1602; another (less detail) 1667.

Parish: Sprotbrough Easter dues (particulars) 1758-1766.

Legal papers concerning presentment to living of Penistone 1717.

Chantry Lands: Our Lady and St. Katherine of Sprotbrough: rental 1548, deeds 1548-1552 and further deeds to 1620.

Hospital of St. Edmund (formerly anchoresses) of Sprotbrough: roll of charters 15th century (mutilated - transcript published in "Archaeologia" vol. 42.), deed of division 1404, lease 1547 and subsequent deeds to 1580 (Strey, Frobisher, Everingham); legal papers concerning lands of the dissolved hospital mid-16th century.

Deeds to other estates: Sprotbrough, Cadeby, Wildthorpe (including manors) Marr, Skinthorpe, Arksey, Doncaster (chapel yard), Hampole, Barnborough, and leases; settlements (Copley and Moyle) including Plumtree, Nottinghamshire and Bowthorpe, Yorkshire 14th-19th centuries (220). Early deeds of Fitzwilliam, Cromwell and other families to property in Retford, Nottinghamshire, Settrington, Skelmanthorpe, Yorkshire, Dronfield, Derbyshire, and elsewhere 13th-15th centuries (60).

Estate: Rentals, cash account books, including Plumtree estates, 1649-1677, 1691, 1709-1793; vouchers (estate business) 17th century; some letters early 18th century.

Personal: Sir Godfrey Copley's register of correspondence 1695-1706. Cash and memoranda book of Rev. Samuel Bower, rector of Sprotbrough 1632-1667 (subsequent entries to 1679).
