These bundles of miscellaneous Quarter Sessions papers consist of drafts and loose papers connected with the business transacted by the justices and the clerk of the peace at Qarter Sessions and in-between the sessions. They also contain some financial papers and some documents acquired as a result of registration or deposit with the clerk of the peace.
The history of these papers is obscure because of a number of rearrangements. It would appear that originally they formed part of composite Sessions files in which different classes of record were separately filed as independant series within the whole. After 1945 it was decided to bind the records and the papers were re-sorted for this purpose. At the time of Calendaring (1976 - 1978) it has seemed right to keep papers of a particular class together for ease of reference.
Because of the storage of these documents in the vaults at Maidstone Town Hall before 1800 a few stray items relating to Maidstone Borough Sessions have found their way into the bundles.
