Description (What the record is about)
-
Letter from William Urwick to Rev. R.J.Davies. He sends a copy of a summary of Mr. Griffiths valuation of the Marrington Estates. 631/3/230. It exceeds its present rental & he believes they will be able to let the property for much more. He was sorry to receive D.'s note to his U's cousin objecting to the felling of any timber on the ground that if the produce was applied to relieve the estate from the mortgage the amount would be reclaimed by D's nephew or his representative as personal estate. He considers he is in error in taking this view of it. The money arising from the sale of the timber was by D's uncle's will directed to be laid out in the purchase of other property to be held and enjoyed in like manner as the Marrington, & if the money is applied in paying off the mortgage debts it will be virtually fulfilling the directions of the will, and he has no doubt the court will sanction such an application of it, but if not the money must be invested till lands can be purchased with it. He hopes he will reconsider the matter & consent to the felling & sale of such timber as is not ornamental & may be felled without injury to the estate a considerable loss has been sustained by its not having been done years ago, in the depreciation of the value of the timber, & the additional income that would have arising therefrom, & he fears that if a fall is not now had & the circumstances become known they will be all censured. He will observe that Alport farm on which Mrs. Davies' £1200 is placed is now only valued at £36.8.10 & Butler has only hitherto paid £31 while Mrs. D. receives for interest £42 - this he thinks will not be permitted to continue, & if the £1200 is not paid off a sale of the farm will be directed. He hopes D. is not suffering from this very severe weather.
Written from Ludlow.
In envelope addressed to Rectory, Aberhafesp.
