Description (What the record is about)
-
This large collection develops the original design work and demonstrates how the patterns were transferred to a bisque tile, first from tracings transferred to tissue or old ledger sheets, envelopes, and other pieces of scrap paper marked out in dot patterns which were then dusted with powdered charcoal to produce an outline as a guideline to the paintresses who worked with numbered glaze colours as per order or catalogue no.
The working method explains the considerable dirt to be found on items. Due to a late rescue operation, the items have also suffered from rodent and bird damage, while some have been glued to backing card some years ago, before they were listed, also resulting in damage. Therefore this is a very delicate collection. There are some modern dot patterns in black ink which predate this listing. Many of the pouncings relate to existing tiles at the Jackfield Tile Museum, or full colour designs in D/MAW/9
The order of items is as found.
