Gallantry Notes: MC: For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty, When his company commander became a casualty he took his machine guns to the outskirts of a village and pushed forward to reconnoitre under heavy fire. Finding it impossible to advance further, he established a defensive position which he held unti late in the afternoon when he was forced to withdraw to conform to the new line.

Citation, bar to MC: For conspicuous gallantry and initiative in command of a section during operations lasting ten days. On one occasion during a heavy enemy counter-attack he took command of four other guns and directed the fire of two sections on the advancing enemy, in spite of the hostile barrage, at close range. , by his courage, powers of leadership and splendid example he was largely instrumental in repulsing the attack.;
