The Society was formed in 1838 and granted a royal charter in 1839, for the promotion of botany and the formation of botanical gardens. Until 1932 the Society leased the ground inside the Inner Circle of Regent's Park, and maintained gardens there. In 1932 it failed to secure a renewal of the lease, and the Society was dissolved. Its surviving record were deposited in the St.Marylebone Public Library.
