Thomas and Joseph Bateman are described in Wrightson's New Triennial Directory for 1818 as 'architects, surveyors, auctioneers and appraisers', with an office in Duddeston Street. Thomas Bateman, 'surveyor of Yardley' (1742-1829) was probably the senior member of the firm. A. J. Bateman exhibited designs for two buildings in Leamington Spa at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists in 1834. Bateman & Drury of Birmingham rebuilt the north side of Chilvers Coton Church, Warwickshire in 1837-1838 and they also designed Leek Workhouse (1838), the Queen's Hospital, Bath Row, Birmingham (1840), and The Queen's College, Paradise Street, Birmingham (1843-1844). By the 1850s the firm was represented by John Jones Bateman (d. 1903) whose son, C. E. Bateman carried on the practice until the 1930s.
