Description (What the record is about)
-
"Parentela et Parentalia Hollesiorum", etc: a history of the family of Holles, in the autograph of Gervase Holles, of Grimsby, and dated 1658. The author was son of Frescheville Holles by Elizabeth, dau. and heir of John Kingston, of Grimsby. He was M.P. for Grimsby 1640-1642, and again 1661-1675. He was a Royalist colonel in the Civil War, and from 1649 to 1660 was compelled to live abroad, in France and Holland. At the Restoration he was made Master of Requests, and he died 10 Feb, 1674-1675. Some volumes of his collections for the history of Lincolnshire, partly autograph, are in the British Museum, Lansdowne MSS.207a-f, Add. MS. 6118, and Harley MS. 6829.
The present work, styled "Theis fruites of my exile", is dedicated to his son Frescheville Holles, the prefatory letter being written at the Hague. It brings his own life only down as far as 1635, when he was made Comptroller of the Middle Temple.
Copious extracts were printed by Arthur Collins, in his "Historical Collections of the Noble Families of Cavendishe, Holles, Vere, Harley and Ogle", 1752, p.50, the MS. being then in the hands of Henrietta Cavendish-Holles-Harley, Countess of Oxford.
Folio; ff. 113.
