Description

Steam Boat Engines (7 items).

1130. Dover Packet No. 5, Firefly (PE &PF). Sep. 1830, Sep. 1834, Jan. 1838. 7 items.
Two 25 horse side lever boat engines, with 30¼ inch cylinders, 2½ foot strokes. Boat re-named Myrtle 1837.

Cross-section, plan of the engine deck beams, side view of engine, plan of the engine sleepers - reverse drawings made in the London office.
Also the following later items - new plummer blocks for raising shafts 6 inches, Sep. 1834; upper headstock frame - partially shaded original and partially shaded reverse drawings and sketch, Jan. 1838 (the original and reverse drawings bear letter codes).

Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 838. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 318.

For H. M. Post Office, Dover station. Firefly, built by Fletcher & Fearnall of Limehouse, was launched on 11 Aug. 1831. The boat was re-named Myrtle in 1837 when the Navy took over the Post Office packet fleet. Note that James Watt & Co. provided two 35 horse screw engines for a collier also called Firefly in 1854.
