Administrative / biographical background

The Confederation was founded in 1946 by the amalgamation of the Hospitals & Welfare Services Union and the Mental Hospital & Institutional Workers Union, which had been established in 1910 as the National Asylum Workers Union. The HWSU was founded in 1918 is the Poor Law Workers Trade Union, changing its name to Poor Law Officers Union in 1922, to National Union of County Officers in 1930, and to HWSU in 1943.
