HOFFMAN, Mr [Imperial Resident in London]: case of Mme Leyencrona, widow of the late Swedish envoy, who is entitled to a mortgage on a property in Berkshire which has been sold to pay the late owner's debts, asks him to see that some money is held back until a power of attorney can be sent from Sweden, which might take some time, because of the lack of communications. 9 Nov 1717

HOLLES, John, Duke of Newcastle: thanks for concern over health; refers to possible dissolution. 2 Aug [1710] Welbeck

Has given Mr Peyton permission to pursue his interest in a certain borough. Does not see why Ld C should make submissions. Endorsed by Ld C "By this it seems he designs not to surrender on ye Dissoln - Harley has so far insinuated." 2 Sept [1710]

On Ld C's resignation. Refers to Mr Monckton [who tried, on Harley's behalf, to get Ld C to stay in the ministry]. Endorsed in Ld C's hand "This Mr M voted agt me..... for ye Question framd to reflect on me". 1 Nov [1710]

HOLLES, Thomas Pelham, Duke of Newcastle: reminds Ld C that King has appointed the following noon for giving him the staff of High Steward at St James. [21 June 1717]

HOLLINGS, J. [? a doctor] to Mr Atwell: refers to Ld C's "loss of flesh", and prescribes for this and other disorders from which he is suffering, and he should take the medicine, in spite of his great adversion to medication. 23 Jan 1719/20

To Mr Atwell: advises that Ld C return home, in spite of inconvenience of travelling. Undated c1720

Has heard of Ld Sunderland's death, has written preface to a collection of papers relating to the Westminster election. 20 April 1722

NEWTON, [Sir] Henry, draft reply from Ld C to: thanking him for sending copy of his book 29 Aug 1713 Cole Green

Thanks Ld C for "accepting of my poor trifles" and assurance that the award drawn up in regard to the Lincoln dispute is fair [see letter from George Newell above]. 5 Sept 1713

NORTHEY, Sir Edward, Attorney General, to Robert Valpole [?original or copy]: concerning conditions of grant of office of collector of subsidy of tonnage and poundage to Sir John Shaw by a non obstante in Letters Patent, and he cannot pass a warrant sent him by Mr Walpole because it would be void by statutes of Richard II providing that customery can only be during pleasure. 21 June 1716

OAKER, William: legal, regarding a case in Chancery, also a reference to his success in obtaining a post near Ld C [endorsed "abt ye Recorder of H." If this is Hertford, there is no reference to be found of Wm Oaker as Recorder at this period.] 26 July 1720

OGILVY, James, Earl of Findlater: proposal to try and dissolve Union has been dropped. Has supported the government in all things, asks for payment of arrears. 3 March 1714/15

Asks for payment of arrears over services in settling succession and Union, amongst other things. Comments on his current position, Scottish affairs, etc. 12 April 1715

His son Deskford has been committed to Edinburgh Castle on suspicion of disloyalty. Affirms loyalty of all his family, and asks Ld C to interpose for bail, or freedom on honour. 23 Aug 1715

News from Scotland of rout of Pretender's forces, and plea for liberty of Earl of kinnoull. [1715]

Refers to the reconciliation between the King and Prince of Wales, and asks him to convey his compliments to the Prince on this occasion. 20 May 1720 Cullen House

OLDMIXON, John: apology to Ld C for having offended House of Lords by publishing an unauthorized translation of a French account of the process against Lord Winton. 17 April 1716

OXENDEN, Sir James: concerning ? a bill of divorce. Reference to "a Revengeful Wife arm'd with all the Pyson'd Tongues of Malice and Falsehood ....", is sure W C will see him through. 5 Feb 1704/5
