Administrative / biographical background

Chantry Mansion was part of an estate presented to Ipswich County Borough Council by Sir Arthur Churchman in 1927. In 1945 the Convalescent Home of the Red Cross and St John Ambulance Brigade was removed to The Chantry from Hintlesham Hall. From 1948 the Home was leased from the Council by the Regional Hospital Board, and was run by the Ipswich Group Hospital Management Committee. The Home was closed in 1986 because of structural problems, and re-opened in 1994 as a Sue Ryder Home
