The Eastman Dental Clinic was established by the Royal Free Hospital, following an offer of funding from George Eastman, of Rochester, New York, in 1926. Eastman offered an initial sum of £200,000 with which to build the Clinic, on condition that the Royal Free provided an endowment with which to maintain it. Eastman had already founded a dental clinic in Rochester, and believed that provision of good dental treatment, particularly for children, was a fundamental element of preventive medicine. The Clinic was built on land adjoining the main buildings of The Royal Free Hospital in Grays Inn Road, with the foundation stone being laid by the Prince of Wales on 30 April 1929 and the Clinic treating its first patients on 17 November 1930.
In 1948, the Clinic was separated from The Royal Free Hospital and became a postgraduate dental teaching hospital under the National Health Service, managed by a Board of Governors. The Institute of Dental Surgery was established as the postgraduate school attached to the Clinic, under the aegis of the British Postgraduate Medical Federation and managed by a Committee of Management. The Director of the Clinic, Mr A. C. Deverell, was appointed as first Dean of the new Institute, which in 1951 was registered under the Companies Act 1948. In 1994 its name was changed to Eastman Dental Institute and under the University College London Act 1999 it became part of UCL.
In 1988, the Eastman was extended to occupy the former buildings of The Royal Free Hospital in Grays Inn Road, following the Royal Free's move to Hampstead in 1974. The clinic, which changed its name to Eastman Dental Hospital, was administered by its Board of Governors until 1996, when the Board was abolished, by Statutory Instrument 1996 no. 511 and the Hospital became part of the University College London Hospitals NHS Trust.
