Gallantry Notes: DCM: 70928 Pte. J. MacKay, M.G.C. (Cardonald) (LG 3 Sept. 1918).
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an enemy attack. Under extremely heavy machine gun fire he volunteered to ride through with an order to forward guns, and returned to report. It was an extremely gallant act, carried out under the heaviest fire. As he rode
through the infantry outposts they cheered him.

War Diary 33 Bn (Narrative of Operations Apr 1918): "The mounted orderlies in particular, did very fine work, Drivers McKay (sic), Hicks & Taylor riding through the infantry outposts under heavy fire time after time, carrying out valauble reconnaissances and always making it possible for gaps in our lines to be immediately filled. Dvr McKay (sic) was on one occasion, cheered by men of the 1st Queens Regt, as he rode through their lines under a hail of fire, whilst endeavouring to find the location of the enemy attack";
