Title

Papers concerning estate matters in Nottinghamshire, Warwickshire, Lincolnshire and Gloucestershire

Date

[1553]-1901

Description

These papers relate to various family estates but particularly Wollaton, Willoughby, Muskham, Trowell and South Leverton in Nottinghamshire, Middleton in Warwickshire and Rothwell and Carlton le Moorland in Lincolnshire.

The papers relate to estate matters such as the property and rents of tenants, railway and canal development, fox hunting, game and timber and forestry management. There are also various papers relating to coal mining and particularly the dispute with the colliers at Westerleigh, Gloucestershire. They also concern business and financial matters including the acquisition and projected acquisition and development of properties such as the house in Stratford upon Avon, Nuthall Temple and properties in St James Street and Hertford Street in London.

There are also papers relating to elections and political matters. Records of business in the House of Lords are dispersed throughout the series. Legal affairs particularly concerning disputes arising over wills and inheritances are also represented. There are also a number of papers relating to the Peverell Court at Totley in the 18th and 19th Centuries.

The papers include a large number of letters from estate managers. Of particular interest are the letters of John Wilkinson to Henry Barnard, Sir Josiah Child and Lady Emma Child concerning the management of the estates following the death of Francis Willughby in 1672, which relate closely to other letters listed at Mi Av 143.
