Description

The general series of records of Wallingford Poor Law Union (1835-1930) was transferred to this Record Office with records of other Unions [see G/W]. The volumes listed below were kept in the Workhouse (Institution) at Wallingford; when the functions of the Poor Law Unions were transferred to the County Council as Public Assistance authority in 1930 these records appear to have remained there. In 1948 Public Assistance became a function of the central government [as National Assistance, later Social Security] and the relief of the aged or infirm poor in the Institution became the "Part III accommodation" provided by the Hospital Board under the National Health scheme. Some of these records carry on to the period after 1948.

The register of deaths in Abingdon Union workhouse [D/XGW 1/15] was found with these records at Wallingford.
