Private papers in IWM collections (11386):
Microfilm copy of a collection of ms diaries, edited ts transcripts of diaries and a very well written ms memoir (168pp in all) covering the greater part of his service as a section officer in, and later 2nd-in-command of, the 143rd Machine Gun Company (from March 1918, 'A' Company, 48th Battalion Machine Gun Corps) in the 48th Division between August 1916 and April 1919. The papers describe in particular his experiences on the Western Front up to November 1917, including participation in the Battle of the Somme (August and November 1916), the German withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line (March - April 1917) and the 3rd Battle of Ypres (October 1917) and then in Italy from November 1917 - March 1918 and during the final advance on the Asiago Plateau in October - November 1918. Some very interesting observations about his fellow officers and their life together when out of the line are to be found in the papers as well as useful statements of his attitude towards active service, his high regard for the Other Ranks and his low opinion of the staff.
