Three wooden boxes each containing 30 lantern slides. The slides are numbered in sequence but are mostly uncaptioned and are generally of a poor quality. The slides depict various stages in the cultivation of cinchona and the production of quinine. Print 1 Map of South America from where cinchona was introduced into India. Print 2 Map of Darjeeling where the Bengal Government started cultivation. Print 3 Map of the Kashyem, Munsong and Burmiak Divisions of Darjeeling in which cultivation was centred. Prints 4-17 General river and landscape scenes in Darjeeling. Prints 18-24 Views of local workers clearing a hillside in preparation for the terrace cultivation of cinchona seedlings. Print 25 General view of terraces containing seed-beds sheltered by thatched roofs. Print 26 Detail of seeds prior to sowing. Prints 27-29 Views of seed-beds during and after germination. Prints 30-32 Seedlings after transplanting into nurseries, still protected by thatched roofs. Prints 33-50 Views of cinchona trees at various stages of growth after the final transplantation. Prints 51-54 Young workers employed in the process of harvesting the bark. Prints 55-61 Bark being dried in specially built sheds. Prints 62-65 Views of the Divisional Bungalow. Prints 66-69 Darjeeling workers. Prints 70-90 Various views of the factory in which the raw bark is manufactured into quinine and cinchona febrifuge. Process = Lantern slides.
