These papers of the Manchester Committee were passed to the Library by the Town Clerk in Sept. 1971.

Administrative / biographical background

On 21 December 1910 344 men and boys were killed in an explosion at the Pretoria Pit, Hulton Colliery.

The Lord Mayors of Manchester and Liverpool and the Mayor of Bolton set up separate Relief Funds, which on 25 Feb. 1911 they agreed should be administered by a General Committee, consisting of themselves, the Mayors of Bury, Wigan and Leigh, the Chairman of Westhoughton U.D.C., twenty nominees of the existing Bolton Committee and ten nominees each of the Liverpool and Manchester Committees. The Mayor of Bolton was made Treasurer and the Town Clerk of Bolton Hon. Sec.
