Arrangement

This catalogue is a partial revision of Henry Harrod's Repertory of the Muniments in the Evidence House at Hunstanton 1869 (hereafter Harrod) and is arranged in four sections:

1 Main section

To order from this section, please cite the reference in the left margin, e.g. LEST/AB 13.

The reference numbers reflect the storage arrangements at Hunstanton where the documents were sorted and stored in 'trays'; they do not show the place of the document in the hierarchical or archival arrangement of the collection. Additional material, after 1869, was added to the trays but not recorded in Harrod. This partially revised list includes some of this material.

Harrod was also annotated to denote items missing at Hunstanton and items transferred to the NRO; these entries have been extracted from the main section of the catalogue and are included in Appendix 1 for reference.

Some trays and bundles have clearly been split. Some documents exhibit signs of water damage sustained at Hunstanton and were dis-ordered perhaps when drying-out: see Appendix 2.

Some items appear to be numbered twice in Harrod. Both entries are included with a cross-reference to the entry corresponding to the number on the document.

2 Supplementary section

This section describes material which came in with the main deposit but was not included in Harrod.

To order from this section, please cite the reference in the left margin and a description of the items required, e.g. LEST suppl. 13.

3 Additional accessions

To order material from this section, please cite the reference in the left margin and a description of the items required, e.g. LEST 7/12/1973 Letter book of Roland Le Strange 1897-1904.

4 Appendices

1. During stocking in 2000-2001, a number of items were not found. Those thought to have been part of the main accession are included in the catalogue and marked 'Missing (2000)' or 'Missing (2001)'.

2. Parts of the collection have been re-arranged but the catalogue not updated: see for example LEST/AM, AN, AO, AP and AQ. This version of the catalogue includes revised descriptions.
