40 horse power side lever boat engine for land, with 35½ inch cylinder, 3½ foot stroke.Reverse plan of the engine and boiler houses, longitudinal section of the engine house, plan of the tunnel; sketch plan of steam pipes - coloured drawing marked "with William Bennett's letter of 1 Nov. 1831"; governor and gearing - coloured reverse drawing; sketch of crank shaft; plan and side view of the engine and wheels and shafts marked "Copy of sketch from Fairbairn & Lillie of connection with engine" (this sheet has a small sketch and note re the fly wheel stuck to it); memorandums by William Bennett dated Manchester, 7 Jul. 1831, for Hollins Hunt and William Middleton about construction of the engine; 4 sheets of miscellaneous sketches and calculations (many by William Bennett); letter from D. Harrison to William Bennett dated Stalybridge, 17 Sep. 1831, requesting him to consult his brother about the steam pipes linking this engine and the 80 horse beam engine. The reverse and coloured drawings bear letter codes.

For Thomas Harrison & Sons. Cotton mill, Stalybridge, Cheshire. The firm had previously bought an 80 horse crank engine in 1823 [see Portfolio 5/485]. They also bought a 60 horse boat engine for land in 1832 [see Portfolio 5/1046].
