WITHERLEY ESTATE RECORDS

The Collection consists almost entirely of the older title deeds to an estate in Witherley, Atterton and Ratcliffe Culey.

This estate was built up by purchase in the first half of the 19th century by the Rev. James Roberts and Rev. James Corall Roberts, both Rectors of Witherley. The Rev. James Corall Roberts bequeathed the Advowson of Witherley and all his estates in Leicestershire to his friend the Rev. Edward Tomes Chamberlayne, who also became Rector of Witherley. The Chamberlayne family made additional purchases and in 1935 the whole estate was sold to the Rt. Hon. the 3rd Baron O'Neill
