80 horse power side lever boat engine for land, with 47½ inch cylinder, 4½ foot stroke.

Rough drawings 1827-1828: 4 sheets of rough drawings by William Creighton - side views of the engine and framing etc. with details of castings, dimensions etc.; sketch of the cylinder and air pump and condenser sent by William Buckle to Abraham Storey (these drawings were made when the engine was still allocated to James Kennedy).
Reverse plan of the engine and boiler houses, longitudinal and cross-sections of the engine house; sketches of parts of the governor; plan and sections of the engine house showing 100 horse beam engine (this sheet of drawings was sent to Boulton Watt & Co.). The reverse drawings bear letter codes.
Also the following later items: "Scheme for the introduction of separate valves & alteration of the working gear" - coloured side view and plan sent by William Bennett, Mar. 1835; part of the working gear - partially shaded drawing, Jan. 1836; sketch of shafts and governor marked "Memorandum given by Mr. Bennett at Soho, 13 Mar. 1840"; tracing of the piston, Mar. 1845; piston rod cross bar (circa Mar. 1845?); sketch of foot valve, Oct. 1845.

For Birley & Kirk. Chorlton Mills, Chorlton upon Medlock, Manchester. The engine was originally ordered by James Kennedy of Manchester, but transferred to Birley & Kirk in Mar. 1828. This engine was erected alongside the 100 horse crank engine purchased by the firm in 1813 when they were Birley & Hornby [see Portfolio 5/449]. The firm later became Birley & Co.
