Description (What the record is about)
-
These plans fall into two groups, those of mining grounds of which the Pomfret/Denys family were lessors in Swaledale and in Cumberland, and those of mines "foreign" to this collection, i.e. in Apedale, Nidderdale and Arkengarthdale.
Some of the earliest plans date from the period when the Duke of Wharton was lessor. Some attempt has been made to divide up the plans further under the headings of various mines, e.g. Blakethwaite, Swinnergill, Lownathwaite etc. which eventually were amalgamated into larger units such as the AD company. Again, for convenience of reference, a number of late 19th and early 20th century plans of Priscilla, Blind Gill and Sir Francis levels which extend into both AD and Old Gang territory have been grouped together. Sir Francis level at least was worked by both companies and in any case the fact that Sir george Denys was at the same time a lessor of both grounds and a managing director of the AD mines explains why a strict division either upon a geographical basis or upon a basis of mining companies is impossible
Several plans also have sections incorporated, but sheets with sections only have been included in the calendar merely to assist physical identification. Two lists of plans have survived but in neither case does the numbering agree with the numbers found on the plans. Where plans are noted as rolled, this again is purely for the purpose of present identification and does not necessarily agree with the form in which the plans were found as many rolled plans have been flattened after repair and are easier to store flat.
The problem of dating many of the plans has not been satisfactorily solved. Many bear no date at all; others merely have a pencil note of the date of a forehead; while others have a dated title but several later additions marked.
