Administrative / biographical background

Ernest Wamsley Lewis was born on 16 February 1898. He served in the army in Italy after the First World War. He joined the Architectural Association as a mature student in 1921. While training at the Architectural Association he became interested in theatre and cinema design. He won the RIBA Alfred Bossom Medal and a travelling scholarship to America. He designed the New Victoria Cinema, London during 1928-1930 which is now a listed building and then won the open competition for a large school in Folkestone in 1938. Ernest Wamsley Lewis formed the Weymouth Civic Society in 1946 and became the first Honorary Secretary. He led a campaign to save the Harbour Masters House, North Quay but unfortunately the building was demolished. However, 2-3 Trinity Street, Weymouth were saved and restored with the aid of the Dorset County Museum. Ernest Wamsley Lewis restored the house and bequeathed the property to Weymouth Civic Society The house is now open to the public. Ernest Wamsley Lewis died in 1978.
