Deeds of 178 High Street, Lewes

These deeds continue the title from those listed as AMS6322, for the circumstances of the retention of which see the headnote to that list

The originals of two deeds have been retained by the depositor; photocopies of them have been included as AMS6328/1 and 2

The property was conveyed by Joseph Morris of Lewes, gent, to Joseph Davey of Lewes, chemist and druggist, and his trustee John Harvey of Cliffe, spirit merchant, for £560 on 24 and 25 May 1826. A plan of the property, including a stable and garden in Castle Ditch Lane (E: Thomas Hodson; W: Thomas Comber), appears in the margin. It was occupied by Widow Spittall and Joseph Davey, apart from a small piece of land occupied by Charles Verrall, owner of 177 High Street (1)

Joseph Davey of Lewes, chemist, died on 21 Oct 1859 and his will of 5 May 1859 was proved at Lewes by his executors and trustees Thomas Davey of Southover, maltster, and William Polhill Kell of Lewes, gent, on 23 Apr 1860; they sold 178 High Street to the occupier, Henry Curtis of Lewes, chemist, for £525 on 17 Oct 1861; the former well had been converted into a cesspool (2)
